Fauré: Berceuse Op 16

Gabriel Faure (1845-1924) composed this Berceuse Opus 16 for  violin (or cello) in 1879. It is presented here in its original key of D major, so the accompaniment can be played from any violin edition.

“Berceuse” means “lullaby” in french and in the original source for this transcription (“Les Soirées Intimes” – a collection of pieces for violin and/or cello published by Hamelle, Paris) the use of the mute is indicated for the entire piece. If there is a child present who needs to sleep, then using the mute is certainly a good idea, otherwise it is probably not really necessary. As with so much of the gentle, transparent French music of this period, the accompaniment would also sound magnificent played on the harp or guitar.
