Mozart Piano Sonata Nº 13 in Bb Major K333: Transcribed for Cello
Here you will find a transcription for cello and simple accompaniment of Mozart‘s Piano Sonata Nº 13 in Bb Major. The entire sonata has been transposed down a minor third into G Major. The accompaniment part is offered in two versions: for piano (harp/guitar) or for a second cello. This edition still needs one more careful revision to make improvements and check for errors. That will be done when I make the audio recordings. In the meantime, here is the rough edition.
FIRST MOVEMENT: Allegro
The only notes that have been changed from the piano version are an octave transposition down for bars 90-93 and 156-158.
SECOND MOVEMENT: Andante cantabile
The notes of the second triplet of the first beat of bar 20 have been changed to make the passage sound better on the cello.
THIRD MOVEMENT: Allegretto grazioso
Despite the presence of the word “grazioso” (gracious, playful) in its title, this movement is quite a monster of endurance and virtuosity. Like many of the final movements of other Mozart Piano Sonatas, it is very long, very fast, and packed with notes. In fact there is not even one bar of rest for the cellist, which means that all of the notes have to be squeezed onto three pages of music in order to avoid needing two music-stands (there is no time anywhere for a page-turn).
The high-speed technical challenges of some of the higher passages make the “Easier Version” especially necessary and attractive.
