Musical Comedy/Humour

What would a “cellofun” website be without some real comedy? Here, as part of our “Light Classical” repertoire library section, we offer some opportunities for being silly. Because we cellists are unable to play while standing, does this give a new meaning to the term “sitcom” ??!!

And let’s not underestimate or undervalue “comedy” and comedians. Making people laugh, and generally finding humour, is (or can be) a serious business. The “Monty Python” team were mostly (very serious) students of Modern History at Cambridge University, and just look at the serious films of Woody Allen.

In the musical comedy field, Dudley Moore, Victor Borge, Le Quatuor and so many others use their creativity and enormous musical talents to find a lighter side to “serious” music. Comedy may pretend to be silly but is often erudition and wisdom, dressed up in silly clothes.

  1. Bolero by Maurice Ravel, played by four musicians on one cello
